My Story
I graduated as a school teacher in 1994 and worked in primary school education for 10 years before taking some time out to be a full time Mum. I went back into education and qualified as an OT in 2017. I started working in adult mental health before returning to my passion of working with children. I then qualified as a Sensory Integration Practitioner and currently work as a Senior Specialist OT for a children's charity.

 I have worked in Education, supporting children and young people with a vast array of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), across a host of different settings, including mainstream schools, specialist schools and units, and Alternative Provisions. Having worked directly for schools, Local Authorities, and the NHS, I moved into the Independent sector in 2016. Increasingly, I am working with children and young people at home who are not accessing formal education, due to the rising levels of Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)

The individual is referred via their parents, school or self referred if an adult.

Assessment
Formal observations and the Sensory Profile 2 assessment are conducted in the most relevant setting.

Child /Â Adolescent in school setting
Typically I observe both a lesson and a break time. I then complete the written assessment with the school teacher.

Child in home setting
If in a home setting, I observe the child with a parent doing an activity for a minimum of 1 hour or I can provide an activity to do with the child myself. I then complete the written assessment with the parent, this typically take 1 hour.

Adolescent / Adult in home setting
I come out to the home and carry out the assessment with the individual.

Sensory Profiling & Analysis
The information gathered from the assessment is processed with software to create the individual's sensory profile. In addition to the profile I analyise the assessment information and results and provide bespoke environmental adaptations and strategies based around each of the 8 senses.

Initial Screening
An initial sensory screening is completed through a screening form sent via email. This identifies whether there are specific sensory challenges for the individual before continuing further.

Reporting
The Sensory Profile is emailed to the School or Home with the option to have a 30minute follow up call to ensure all recommendations are clear.

Agreement
Once we agree to proceed, I send a formal agreement outlining costs and the full timeline of the assessment process.

Common Questions
Can the sensory assessment go towards supporting an EHCP?
Yes, sensory assessments are well-recognized as evidence of a child's needs at school. The assessments I have created have been used to support funding for children in mainstream settings, as well as to provide evidence for specialist school places.
Can you provide regular sensory assessments for schools?
Yes, in addition to working with parents and individual adults, I also work directly with schools to provide assessments on an agreed contract basis.
How much does an assessment cost?
The cost of the Sensory Profile 2 assessment depends on the time required, which varies based on the individual's age and the assessment location. Typically, the price ranges between £600 and £700.
